The credit card industry has issued extensive security requirements, known as the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard (DSS). If you accept credit card payments either online or in your box office, then here are some key issues you need to consider:
- Any company that transmits cardholder data for other organizations is defined by Visa and MasterCard to be a Level 1 Service Provider.
- All Level 1 Service Providers must validate their PCI compliance with an audit by a Qualified Security Assessor and periodic scans by an Approved Scanning Vendor.
- All Service Providers must register their compliance with Visa and MasterCard.
- Every Service Provider that is PCI compliant is named on the lists published by Visa and MasterCard.
- By using a Service Provider that is verified to be PCI compliant, you are granted safe harbor and are not liable for security breaches.
Verify That Your Ticketing System is PCI Compliant
Every Service Provider is required to register compliance with Visa and MasterCard. To find out if your online ticketing system is PCI compliant, visit Visa’s List of Compliant Service Providers or MasterCard’s List of Compliant Service Providers.
PCI compliance is also required for in-house software, even if transactions are not performed online. If you use packaged software that is installed in your box office, then you can find out if your ticketing software is compliant on Visa’s List of Validated Payment Applications.
